China
China is one of the world's oldest
civilizations, consisting of states and cultures dating back more than six
millennia. It has the largest population and the third largest land in the
world.
For many Centuries in the human history, China remained as one of the most
powerful and the richest country in the world. However, since middle of 19
Century, China
experienced over 100 years of foreign invasions and conflicts, civil rebellions
and civil wars, and quickly fell to one of the poorest and weakest country in
the world.
The stalemate of the last Chinese Civil war after the WWII has resulted two
political states using the name of China: the People’s Republic of China (PRC),
commonly known as China, which administering mainland china, and the Republic
of China (ROC), administering Taiwan and its surrounding islands.
China started her reform and
open policy in 1978 with much success, its economy experienced nearly 30 years
of continuous increases. As the result, China has been emerged politically
and economically as a world powerful country again. Under such situation, Hong
Kong, which was ceded to Great Britain
in 1842, was returned by UK
to China in 1997 and so was
Macau, which was ceded to Portugal
in 1887, in 1999.
