Hungary
Before 1867, Hungary
belonged to Austrian dominated Austro-Hungarian empire which existed during 1686-1918. Stamps listed under Austria were used in Hungary during 1850-1871. Hungary
managed to become a theoretically equal half of the empire in 1867 and its post became independent on
May 1, 1867. The defeat suffered in World War I led to the collapse of the
Austro-Hungarian Empire in 1918.
The defeat of Hungarian army by Romania
led to a four months occupation by Romania in the last half of 1919.
At this time of period, part of Hungary
territory was also occupied by France
and Serbia.
Hungary joined Axis countries
and was defeated in the Second World War and became a member of socialist block
during 1945-1989.
