Slovakia Republic

Slovakia is a landlocked country in Central Europe and a member state of the European Union.
Before
the WWI Slovakia was part of the Austrian Empire and Austria-Hungary. In 1918, following
the collapse of the Austro-Hungarian empire, Slovakia
joined the regions of Bohemia and neighboring Moravia to form an independent Czechoslovakia
Under
pressure from Nazi Germany, the First Slovak Republic
declared its independence from Czechoslovakia
in 1939. The government was strongly influenced by Germany and gradually became a
puppet regime.
After
World War II, pre-war Czechoslovakia
was reestablished. The country were a Communist state from 1948 until the 1989
Velvet Revolution. On 1 January 1993, the Czechoslavakia peacefully split into
the Czech and Slovak republics.
